Is Evidence-Informed Innovation an Oxymoron?

19 August 2020 - 5.00 to 6.00pm AEST

The Centre for Evidence and Implementation and Monash University are delighted to present the next webinar in the Evidence and Implementation Summit Virtual Series and warmly welcome you to a conversation with Ravi Gurumurthy, Chief Executive Officer of Nesta, and Jo Taylor, Chief Capability Officer at Paul Ramsay Foundation, along with with Dr Robyn Mildon, Executive Director of the Centre for Evidence and Implementation

Nesta is a UK foundation supported by a financial endownment that works with partners around the globe to bring ideas to life to change the world for good. Paul Ramsay Foundation is an Australian organisation focused on breaking cycles of disadvantage by investing with partnerships for potential. Before joining Nesta, Ravi Gurumuthy founded and led the Airbel Innovation Lab at the International Rescue Committee where he was responsible for designing, testing and scaling products and services for people affected by crisis in over 40 countries, from reducing acute malnutrition to expanding employment for refugees. He also held a number of roles in the UK Government, including Director of Strategy at the Department of Energy and Climate Change and strategic advisor to the Foreign Secretary. Over the past 20+ years Jo Taylor has worked in the For Purpose sector in the UK and Australia, leading philanthropic foundations for families, corporations and government departments. Jo manages a diverse range of philanthropic trusts and foundations and has distributed in excess of $300m to for purpose organisations focused on creating long term transformational change.

Both Ravi and Jo have significant experience with funding innovation, and this timely discussion will focus on the role of evidence and implementation in innovation, particularly innovation catalysed and supported by the foundation sector. The social innovation community often looks to the new , identifying potentially catalytic ideas. Within this context, what is the place for good evidence and effective implementation, and do they matter? If so, are there gaps? And how can key stakeholders, particularly foundations, look to leverage good evidence and effective implementation while also cultivating the nimble, fast-paced approaches that enable innovation?

This conversation will particularly focus on the opportunities and challenges for foundations and innovators in the COVID era, where mounting social challenges require urgent solutions, against a backdrop of increasing pressure on global foundation and endowments.
